Week 9 2021 NFL Survivor Pool

Congratulations to those who survived week 8!

72 players made it to week 9 and below is a reminder of the rules:

  1. You make one pick each week and if your pick loses or ties, you will be eliminated. If your team wins, you will move on to the next week.
  2. You must choose a new team each week. Choosing a team in any given week that you’ve already picked in a previous week will get you eliminated. (For example, if you’re still in by week 10, that means you should have chosen 10 different teams). So you have to plan accordingly. Check HERE if you are unsure.
  3. Your pick will have to be selected before the start of the football week; so you have until Thursday 8 pm ET. (excluding Week 12 where the thanksgiving games begin at 12:30 pm ET so that will be week 12’s deadline) Any picks submitted after the deadline will not count.

More specifics to our survivor pool:

  1. The Prize pool will be a winner take all and the amount will be $3000. If by week 18 there are still a few people left then the prize pool will be split among all players left.
  2. If all remaining players get knocked out in the same week then we will carry it over another week and they will all still be alive but the team they chose will not be able to get picked again. (For example; all 10 people left in week 14 having a losing pick; then all 10 will still be alive the following week.)
  3. If for any reason, you cannot submit your pick through the community survivor page (technical issues, can’t access, etc.) you can email your pick to moderator@bovada.lv but again, it must be received before the deadline; no exceptions. If you email a pick and make a selection in the Poll, your email Pick is what will count.
  4. If you select a team and that game is canceled and not rescheduled for that same week due to Covid after the deadline of submitting picks; will result in a pass to the next week but you will not be able to select that team again. If the game is canceled and re-scheduled before the deadline of submitting your picks then you must select a new team. Failing to select a new team will result in elimination.

I can’t take MNF I can’t take SNF

I can’t take a few games because of teams taken.

Ugh I guess it’s either Colts Patriots or Dolphins

And I look at week 10 and I guess I need to save one of those teams so man

This shits getting difficult

NFL Survivor Pool Ranking

After reviewing three sites (NFL.com, ESPN.com, and TheAthletic.com) for their power rankings, I had the crazy idea to publish my first (and probably last) NFL Survivor Pool Ranking!

I don’t know if I’ll ever do this again, but it was fun to do (at least once). The 72 survivors are ranked by my Strength calculation. I first took the three sites’ power rankings for the 32 teams and averaged them. For example, NFL and ESPN rank Green Bay #1 this week, The Athletic ranks them #2. So GB’s average rank is 1.33. Detroit is 31.67.

I then applied those rankings to each survivor’s previous picks. Note that I’m using today’s rankings applied to previous picks, so rankings obviously changed over time.

This isn’t intended to be any kind of rating or ranking of how well survivors have chosen thus far; certainly some of the teams we’ve picked in the first few weeks ( :nauseated_face:cough :face_with_head_bandage: Chiefs, Seahawks, Broncos cough :face_with_thermometer:) have fallen from grace. The point is to compare how many of today’s top-ranked teams we survivors have already used, and by inference, how many of them are still available to pick over the remaining 10 weeks.

So, in my highly scientific and 100% proven ranking system, this week’s #1 ranked survivor is @Buffystud, whose Strength rating is an amazing 16.38. Buffystud’s choices thus far, listed from highest ranked to lowest are: Titans (8.33), Raiders (10), Chiefs (14), Browns (15.67), Vikings (19), Colts (20), Seahawks (20), Bears (24). Half of those teams are currently ranked in the bottom half of the league, and the highest ranking team, the Titans, are ranked #8.33 in my composite ranking. So Buffystud still has 8 of the top 10 ranked teams available over the remaining 10 weeks. Way to go, Buffystud!

(If only the higher ranked team would always cooperate and beat the lower ranked team every week, this would be so easy!)

So without further ado, here is StndrDeviant’s first ever Survivor Pool Ranking after Week 8:

So far this season, about 3 out of 8 times the underdog has won. Not just covered the spread, but won outright. (By my calculations, 54% of the favorites have failed to cover.) 20 times a favored team has lost by double digits (although only once has a team lost when favored by double digits). So as we all know, betting on favorites is only going to be a part of the winner(s)’ strategy; luck has to be a big factor, too.

I should add that my data will likely differ slightly from other figures in the sports press, depending upon what spreads we use, which depends on both where they get their lines (mine come from Bovada) and when they get them. Mine are normally snapped sometime Thursday afternoon, shortly before we need to lock in our pick, whereas sportswriters likely use lines much closer to game time. Their data doesn’t compare as well to our contest, since we must finalize our decisions by Thursday evening.
